The PitBull Project is going well!

Just an update to my last Post regarding turning an idea into a Personal Project… The “Pitbull” project! :)

It is now in full swing, and the mini photo shoots are underway. I am having a lot of fun not only capturing these shots, but meeting these wonderful dogs! They have been so sweet.

The Kisses aka “Face Washes” I have received lets me know this isn’t in vane! I am fortunate to meet these dogs… they are alive today because they were born before the BSL Law was passed in 2005. As with my guy Tyson, who has been a joy in my life for 14+ years.

Had they been born after 2005, with the exact same personality traits and loving natures, they would be euthanized along with 1000′s because they are now illegal in Ontario. Just for being a “Pit Bull” looking dog. Its insane really to look at the numbers….which will be in my next post regarding Bill 16 and the Rally at Queens Park.

Tomorrow I am scheduled for another mini-shoot with another Snuggly girl! And a few more shoots over time…. Stay tuned for the pictures!

I can’t wait for this collection to be complete! I already have ideas rolling around in my head on how to use these photo’s in a positive way! If at the end of this, one person that was convinced by the Media hype and scare tactics can see them for the dogs they are and not the monsters they are portrayed to be…. I will consider that a personal victory!

January Dog Hike for Hersheys Bill

Paws on the Shore invited me to their Dog Hike this January, it was a fun day to take a Hike and raise money for Hershey’s Bill! They raised $250.00 for the cause!

Despite the heavy winds, rain and wet snow the turn out was great. Many dedicated people and their adorable dogs participated.

Please enjoy the photo’s from the Hike!

P.S. My favourite shot is the winner of the Homemade Dog Hat by Brainwashed Head Gear , you’ll know it when you see it! Just adorable!

Pit Bull Project…let’s get this going!

AND FINALLY AN IDEA STARTS COMING TO LIFE!

As you know from my blog post about the Hershey’s Bill Rally I am a supporter of bringing back the “Pit Bull” breed and lifting the ridiculous Ban on them.

I do not speak from anything but experience, and understanding of a beautiful breed of dog banished due to a Media Hype…. similar to Y2K… causing a law to be passed.

My end goal? To have a collection of 15 – 20 pictures, one of each dog!

The pictures are going to show the “Pit Bull” as a Dog, Family Member and Friend to those that own and love them. So with that said, they will be FUN!

***The photo’s will be passed on to any group supporting the Hershey’s Bill & MPP’s fighting against the BSL to be used as needed ****

I am looking for current owners willing to have their dog participate! The photo will be given to you on a Disc to keep & make as many prints as you wish of your little star!

It will be “yours truly” and what I call my “travelling circus” (backdrop stand, lighting, camera and props) coming out to perform a “mini-shoot” :)

The privacy of the Owners will be honoured, and Dog’s real names will NOT be shared with anyone. Each Photo will include the “Name of the Photo” only!

As you will notice above, my dog Tyson 14yr old Pit Cross was used as my “Test Subject” and is being lovingly referred to as “The Old Man”.

Thanks & I hope to hear from you soon!  vanessa@vbvphotography.com

Anti BSL Rally -Support Hershey’s Bill

On Saturday Oct 1st, there was a Rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto to Support MPP Cheri DiNovo and Hershey’s Bill.

As someone who has worked with Animals in all aspects of the Pet Industry, Veterinary Assistant, Pet Photographer, Pet Valu Store manager, Petsmart and in general a life long Pet owner…finder/rescuer… I can say with complete honesty and conviction, the BSL is a horrible injustice to a Beautiful Breed of Dog.

What went wrong? Well this is my opinion and findings…take it or leave it…

The “Pit Bull” dog became a very popular Breed of Dog due to it’s size, strength, and what people find to be an intimidating look. A “Bad Ass” dog…that people trying to appear “Bad Ass” would seek out to own as a “Status Symbol”. Watch MTV videos? Then you know what I mean.

Unfortunately people started “Back Yard Breeding” to make money off this Hype or because taking on a Dog never meant spending $ to spay/neuter. The result was devastating to the breed, in that people who otherwise hadn’t or shouldn’t have owned a Pet, now had easy access to a powerful puppy entering their homes.

Over the years (at the Vets, or in the Grooming shop) dog bites would happen….”Fear Bites” from ALL breeds of Dogs Big and Small….to be honest MOSTLY Small LOL. But teeth are teeth and it was never pleasant to bleed at work! I only have one story in what might be a hundred bites over the years of a Pit Bull….and it was a fear reaction to being put in the cage after being bathed/brushed. Nothing notable. Many Sheltie, Shih-Tzu, Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Dalmation, Sheppard etc. bites come to mind. The worst I was ever attacked was by a half sedated CAT wearing a Catheter bag! Hand to God. You would have thought I had been in a fight with a lawn mower.

The Media took the stories of Pit Bull bites and ran with them….never ever documenting the many other dog bites that happen all over the city every year. Because the media didn’t tell you so, doesn’t mean they don’t happen! They do. All Bites require the dog be quarantined for 10 days, at the vet clinic or pound. I saw many dogs quarantined, Pit Bull wasn’t a breed that stood out in the list of offenders.

The best outcome from Hershey’s Bill, we stop holding an innocent breed responsible for a rash of Pet owners who have no business owning a house fly, never mind a Pet. The dog’s should not be banned, Poor Pet Owners should. Banned from owning Pets and held responsible for mis-treating an animal through negligent ownership.

Before you judge, ask yourself, have I owned a Pit Bull, Known a Pit Bull, Saw a Pit Bull Attack…. NO? Then who told you to be afraid, likely the media? The same people who chase you down to make ratings when your home just burnt to the ground (personal reference) or that it will rain tomorrow…and you get a sun burn for listening? Make up your own mind, through education, and stand up for the 10, 000 dogs that have died under this law since it was passed in 2005.
